How do I get to Beqa Adventure Divers? High quality, air-conditioned transport can be arranged for you. Coming from Nadi it's a comfortable 2hr ride, from the Coral Coast and Suva the ride is even shorter at 1hr.
Can anyone do THE SHARK DIVE? Due to the depth of the dive, only certified divers may attend. Ideally, divers should have a total of at least 30 dives, with 5 or more in the 30m/100ft range. Divers with fewer than 10 dives are required to be supervised during the deep section of the dive.
How many divers are allowed? To ensure the quality of diving with Beqa Adventure Divers, we limit our main boat, MV Predator, to 14 guests. When another local operator at THE SHARK DIVE joins us, the maximum number of divers is limited to 30.
What sharks will we see? The regular shark population of Shark Reef Marine Reserve comprises of Bulls, Silvertips, Sicklefin Lemons, Grey Reefs, Blacktip Reefs, Whitetip Reefs, Tawny Nurses and the occasional Tiger. See our Shark Info Section for more details.
When is the best time of year for THE SHARK DIVE? THE SHARK DIVE is run year-round with large numbers of sharks on every dive. The Bull Sharks are less abundant during the months of November and December, which is mating season. Check out the Bull Shark Tagging Project to read more about the current research going on and what has been learned so far.
Is THE SHARK DIVE dangerous? THE SHARK DIVE has been running for over 5 years now without incident. However, this is a dive with some of nature's largest predators. All participants must read and sign documents informing them of the dive and listen to the pre-dive briefing to understand the dive procedures. At any point, for whatever reason, the staff has the authority to end the dive or remove divers from the water if deemed unsafe.
What wetsuit should I bring? All divers on THE SHARK DIVE are required to wear full-length suits. Most divers visiting Fiji find that a 3mm provides sufficient exposure protection during the summer months where water temperature averages 28°C/83F. During the cooler winter months or for those making repetitive dives a 5mm is usually adequate.
Can I get a DVD of my dive? A great way to remember your dive and show all your friends! Every SHARK DIVE is videoed by our in-house videographer. DVD's are professionally edited and available for purchase at a price of FJ$65.
What other dives do you offer? THE SHARK DIVE is our main attraction, however that's not to say there are no great dives in Beqa Lagoon. The soft corals of Beqa Lagoon are world famous and there are even a few wrecks on the seabed. Check out our dive sites page for more details.
What is the visibility? The visibility in Beqa Lagoon is quite variable due to many factors including rainfall, tide, current and season. Generally, during the cooler winter months there is less nutrient in the water and visibility is best at over 30m/100ft. This may drop during the summer period to 20m/70ft on bad days.
What if there is an emergency? All our boats are fully equipped with VHF radios and safety equipment. The staff of Beqa Adventure Divers is fully trained in first aid and oxygen administration. We support the excellent Fiji Recompression Chamber Facility, located at the Suva Private Hospital, about 40 minutes away by car. In an emergency the staff will coordinate an immediate evacuation to the hyperbaric and diving physicians at the facility. Treatment fees vary depending on what is required, be sure to obtain suitable travel/health insurance to cover recompression chamber treatments.
